Consultants need to quickly understand previous technical developments associated with a proposed client project. A full literature search can reveal details unknown to the client and lead to better recommendations and solutions. This presentation will demonstrate how to use the IEEE's on-line database of journal and conference papers. This talk will provide an overview of the ZigBee Alliance and its mission. It will address the basic functionality delivered by the standard, where it fits in the wireless arena, plus next steps for the 230 member strong ecosystem of companies creating applications for use in home, commercial and industrial markets. This talk will consist of an overview of the implementation of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) within a microcontroller chip. The development of supporting drivers and the use of in-circuit debuggers will also be presented. The talk will conclude with a description of the Microchip Design Partner Program which allows consultants to benefit from their high-volume designs. Bruce Himebauch will present a history of the 802.11 standards family, the 802.11n Task Group N (TGn) and the issues surrounding implementation of 802.11 products. He will also describe the driving forces behind the creation of each new standard.
Consulting in the Solar Power Age
Tuesday, November 13, 2007
Miguel Gomez's talk will provide an overview of the solar power industry, an outline of its technology challenges, and some of the ways in which technology consultants can participate in this important arena.
Networking for Consultants
Tuesday, October 16, 2007
Consultants often find face-to-face networking to be difficult, particularly in a room full of strangers. This meeting's panel will address how to approach this kind of situation, as well as others faced by consultants while they are marketing their services.
Joint Venture Risks
Tuesday, September 18, 2007
Many Bay Area companies and startups are at some point approached with attractive proposals for a joint venture. These typically come from foreign companies, and they frequently have disastrous results. This talk will cover the risks of joint ventures, list some of the danger flags, suggest practical ways to minimize the risks, and offer suggestions regarding exclusive licensee risks.
Conference: Flash Memory Summit
Tuesday, August 07, 2007
IEEE-CNSV will have a booth on the Exhibit Floor at this event, allowing CNSV members with a great vehicle for publicizing their skills as well as the merits of our organization. CNSV members also receive special pricing for this conference, and two CNSV members will be awarded full conference admission as well. Many aspects of this event that are free, so register now on the conference website. This presentation will describe uses of System-on-Chip (SoC) technology in a wide variety of applications, and will include a demonstration of SoC visual embedded design tools. It will also describe how Cypress Semiconductor helps skilled consultants find clients through its CYPros program. This talk will discuss the unique requirements for a real-time operating system running on a system on a chip. In particular, it will go over the options of writing your own RTOS, purchasing an off-the-shelf RTOS, and using a software synthesis tool to automatically generate an RTOS.

Jason Baumbach will show how System-on-Chip (SoC) technology reduces component count and lowers bill-of-materials costs by describing its use in the following applications:

  • backlight control
  • voltage sequencing
  • voltage monitoring
  • temperature sensing
  • peripheral USB interfaces

Jason will also describe the use of SoC in the following user interface technologies:

  • resistive touchscreens
  • capacitive touchscreens (both surface and projected capacitance)
  • capacitive buttons/sliders/touchpads
  • capacitive proximity detection
  • piezoelectric pressure sensors
  • pyroelectric infrared proximity detection

Jason will then demonstrate use of the Programmable System-on-Chip (PSoC) Express visual embedded design tool to generate a complete application ready to program into a device. In under 15 minutes, he will create a design that performs potentiometer position sensing, drives a 4-digit 7-segment LED with the voltage read from the pot, drives LEDs as a bargraph for the pot, and acts as an I2C master to read CapSense buttons from a device acting as an I2C slave.

Jason will also describe how Cypress Semiconductor's CYPros program helps consultants find clients. A CYPros Certified Consultant is an independent consultant who has demonstrated competence in Cypress's USB, WirelessUSB and PSoC (Programmable System-on-Chip) Mixed Signal Arrays products. Cypress provides an online method to allow its customers to find CYPros Certified Consultants.

CNSV and Cypress are teaming to help CNSV members become CYPros Certified Consultants.

About the Speaker
Jason G. Baumbach is a Field Applications Engineer (FAE) at Cypess Semiconductor. After graduating from the University of Dayton in 1992, he served in the US Air Force for seven years where he worked on a variety of military-related technology products including adaptive optics. In 1999 he joined Cypress Semiconductor as an applications engineer and has had a variety of technical roles in three product lines.

Jason has one patent issued and three patents pending, and has presented at the Network Systems Design Conference, Communications Design Conference, ION-GPS and other conferences. As an FAE, he currently works with customers on a variety of embedded systems including networking equipment, consumer devices and medical/industrial equipment.
