Conference: Embedded Systems Conference

IEEE-CNSV will be in the IEEE Media booth #1445 on the Exhibit Floor of the San Jose Convention Center during the Embedded Systems Conference. The dates are Tue.-Thu., 3-5 April. Please stop by and see us. The history of the use of embedded UNIX variants will be presented, as well as how these have led to the current wide-spread use of embedded Linux. Learn the practical benefits of using a blog for project communication and a wiki for project coordination and collaboration, and how to use these tools to land new projects and create deliverables, Kris Vossough will present a technical primer on Nano and Micro Technology. Protecting Your Intellectual Property

A tutorial on intellectual property and patents will be presented. This will include a discussion of the legal and technical requirements for filing and obtaining a patent in the United States and internationally, and some discussion of inventor rights, and the possible obligations to assign inventions to employers as employees and as consultants. You are invited to come and hear stories of lessons learned from fellow consultants, and to share your own experiences. We will also award Emeritus Membership status to Bobbie Cronquist and Bill Rousseau, and will recognize the work done by Debra Willrett in creating the new website. Note that this event will be held at House of Sichuan in Cupertino. Come learn about how you can expand your consulting business by working with the SBA to gain access to high-tech small businesses. Peter Salmon will give a broad-ranging presentation covering Invention, Patents, SBIR Grants and his new flip chip connector technology. Peter's talk will be of interest to a broad range of technologists, as well as to those interested in the art of creation.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is the Federal Agency that provides guaranteed loans, training, counseling, government contracting assistance and a host of other services to small business throughout the United States.

Michael Elkin, Assistant District Director for Entrepreneurial Development in San Francisco, will discuss how the SBA can help your consulting company benefit from the various SBA programs and how you can work with organizations like SCORE and Small Business Development Center to provide more services to Bay Area small businesses.

Some of the services Mr. Elkin will discuss include:

  • How to obtain SBA Financing
  • Management training and counseling for small businesses
  • How to participate in SCORE or Small Business Development Center as a consultant
  • How SBA can help you get you get Federal Government contracts
  • How to access government grants for technology research (Small Business Innovation Research)

About the Speaker
Michael Elkin is the Assistant District Director for Entrepreneurial Development for the San Francisco District of the U.S. Small Business Administration. Mr. Elkin is responsible for all management training and consulting programs in the San Francisco region, including 10 small business development centers, 5 SCORE chapters and 3 entrepreneur centers. Last year, these programs provided services to over 43,000 business and start-ups.

Mr. Elkin has been with the Small Business Administration for 16 years. Prior to his position as Assistant District Director, Mr. Elkin managed the Oakland One Stop Capital Shop, and was the Regional Manager for SBA's International Trade program, responsible for developing the Agency's trade programs throughout California, Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii.

Mr. Elkin served as an U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Kenya from 1986-1988, providing management consulting to small businesses in the Mt. Kenya region. Mr. Elkin continues to stay involved in global development issues and has worked as a consultant for the International Labour Organization most recently assisting the organization in the development of a new initiative to target growth oriented enterprises throughout East and Southern Africa and South Asia.

Mr. Elkin has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from San Francisco State University. He can be reached at 415.744.8491.
