An Open Platform for Wearable Computing
Tuesday, February 21, 2012
Ted Ladd talk will provide an overview of the WIMM Labs Android-based open platform for wearable technology, as well as insight into how licensees can build products based on the WIMM hardware, software and web services. This is a powerful business opportunity for software and accessory developers, as well as consultants.
Conference: Ethernet Technology Summit
Tuesday, February 21, 2012
IEEE-CNSV is an organizational sponsor of the Ethernet Technology Summit, a 3-day conference at the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel in San Jose on Tue.-Thu., Feb. 21-23. As computing power and sophisticated software gets less expensive, student-created computer animated films are giving Hollywood a run for its money. This talk will show how a team of 20 students created a multi-million dollar look on a limited budget, and it will include a screening of their short film Worlds Apart.
Conference: Storage Visions 2012
Sunday, January 08, 2012
Storage Visions focuses on digital storage and the creation, production, distribution, archiving and use of commercial as well as user-generated content. IEEE-CNSV is an Organizational Sponsor of the Eleventh Annual Storage Visions Conference, which immediately precedes the International CES in Las Vegas.
Consulting in the Field Robotics Age
Monday, December 12, 2011
Great engineering consulting opportunities are opening up in field robotics. This talk will discuss the technology being developed in this arena.
Conference: Server Design Summit
Tuesday, November 29, 2011
Server Design Summit will cover the latest trends in designing for next-generation virtualized servers in the cloud computing era. From simple blades to powerful high-end systems, servers are the key to managing networked computing. An IEEE-CNSV booth on the Exhibit Floor will allow our members to publicize their skills as well as the merits of our organization. This talk will address two areas: (1) how the new America Invents Act (AIA) both helps and hinders independent engineering consultants, and (2) Intellectual Property (IP) protection for engineers. In this talk, Allen Peterson will walk us through how to best take advantage of Twitter, LinkedIn and other collateral for marketing one's small engineering consulting businesses. This talk will focus on the pursuit of wearable, assistive, mobility devices at Tibion Corp. Consulting income was a key to Tibion's survival from initial ideas in 2001 to first venture funding in 2006 and on to product introduction in 2010.

WIMM Labs has created an open platform for wearable computing that includes a capacitive touch screen, an OS distilled from open-source Google Android, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, as well as an accelerometer, magnetometer and vibrating alarm. This open approach is far different from the proprietary products available from Motorola, Jawbone, Apple, Basis, Fossil and a variety of other companies.

Ted Ladd's talk will include an overview of the platform, as well as insight into how licensees can build products based on the WIMM hardware, software and web services. Using WIMM's partnership with Foxconn, designers have a fast track to bringing products to market. This is a powerful business opportunity for software and accessory developers, as well as consultants.

A recent Test Report provides some interesting insight on the platform.

About the Speaker
Ted Ladd is the Director of Developer Relations for WIMM Labs. Ted was the first platform evangelist at Palm Inc., introducing developers and partners to mobile computing.

Ted holds an MBA from Wharton, an MA in International Economics from Johns Hopkins, a BA from Cornell and a certificate from the Oklahoma Horseshoeing School. He is addicted to gadgets, chocolate and trail running, although unfortunately they do not cancel each other out.

CNSV Pre-Meetings: 6-7 pm
Intellectual Property (IP) SIG
Co-Chairs: Peter Salmon and Jonathan Wells

Presentation: Starting Out As An Expert Witness: A Roundtable Panel Discussion

Interested in pursuing an Expert Witness assignment? Are you new to this field, and want to learn more? A panel of three expert Experts will share their early experiences as Expert Witnesses, and offer tips and advice that they have learned during their careers.

Confirmed speakers, all of whom are CNSV members:

  • Glen Balzer: Sales and marketing organizations and operations expert
  • Brian Berg: Storage devices and interfaces expert
  • Peter Martin: Software development, test and evaluation expert
  • Jonathan Wells: Panel Moderator

Time will be allocated for each speaker to briefly introduce themselves and to describe their experiences. This will be followed by questions from the moderator, and then questions will be taken from the floor.

Medical Device (Med) SIG
Chair: Shashi Sathyanarayana

Presentation: Multiple Topics from Multiple Speakers

This month, the MedSIG is introducing a new multiple-speaker/topic format as an alternative to the usual single-speaker/single-topic format. In this new format, two to four consultants will each deliver short (~10-15 minute) presentations.

In introducing this format, we seek to increase awareness of the work our colleagues do, as well as to provide a platform to practice delivery. Each of this months speakers is a CNSV member.

Talk #1: Dennis Falkenstein, President of iOnTrends, LLC will speak on "Consultation on Global 'Mega-Technology' for Cancer Treatment." This is about a 250 MM Euro project for ion beam accelerators using global suppliers in a consortium.

Talk #2: Walt Maclay, President of of Voler Systems will present "How to Fix the Gaps in Your Medical Device Development."

Talk #3: Shashi Sathyanarayana, of Numeric Insight Computing will present "A quick tour of Mathematica, a computational software program used in scientific, engineering, and mathematical fields."
